Vancouver Island Ferry Guide: The Best Route from Vancouver

If you are wondering how to get to Vancouver Island from Vancouver, the simplest answer is to take a ferry. There is no bridge connecting Vancouver Island to mainland British Columbia, but several ferry routes make the journey relatively easy.

The best route depends on where you are going. Choose Victoria for the southern Island or Nanaimo if you are heading toward Sproat Lake, Tofino, Ucluelet or northern Vancouver Island.

I brought my car across as part of my seven-day Vancouver Island road trip, entering through Nanaimo and returning through Victoria. This created a natural loop without unnecessary backtracking.

Here is the quickest way to choose:

• For Victoria: Take BC Ferries from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay.
• For Nanaimo, Sproat Lake or Tofino: Take BC Ferries from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo (Departure Bay).
• From Richmond, YVR or southern Vancouver: Consider Tsawwassen to Duke Point.
• Without a car: Take Hullo from downtown Vancouver to Nanaimo or walk onto BC Ferries for Victoria.

The Three BC Ferry Routes from Vancouver

Three main BC Ferries routes connect Metro Vancouver with Vancouver Island. All three transport vehicles and walk-on passengers.

Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay: Best for Victoria

Take the Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay ferry if you are visiting Victoria, Sidney, Butchart Gardens or southern Vancouver Island. Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal is located south of Vancouver in Delta. The crossing takes approximately 1 hour and 35 minutes and arrives at Swartz Bay, about 30 minutes north of downtown Victoria.

This is the most convenient route for following my two-day Victoria itinerary. It also works well if you plan to visit Butchart Gardens, which is located between Swartz Bay and Victoria. The crossing through the Southern Gulf Islands is also incredibly scenic, so spend at least part of the journey outside if the weather allows.

Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay: Best for Tofino

The Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay ferry is usually the best choice for Nanaimo, Parksville, Sproat Lake, Tofino and Ucluelet.

Horseshoe Bay is located in West Vancouver, while Departure Bay is close to central Nanaimo. The crossing takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes.

This is the route I used to begin my Vancouver Island road trip. Arriving in Nanaimo positioned me perfectly for Cathedral Grove, Sproat Lake and the drive toward Tofino. At the time of writing, vehicles travelling from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay must be booked and paid for in advance. Drive-up vehicle fares are not available in this direction, so do not arrive without a confirmed booking.

Tsawwassen to Duke Point: Another Route to Nanaimo

The Tsawwassen to Duke Point ferry also travels to Nanaimo, but Duke Point is located south of the city rather than near downtown.

This route takes approximately two hours and can be more convenient if you are starting near Richmond, Vancouver International Airport or southern Vancouver.

Make sure you check the terminal carefully when booking. Duke Point and Departure Bay are both in Nanaimo, but they connect to different terminals on the mainland.

The Ferry Route I Used for My Road Trip

I started at Horseshoe Bay and took the ferry to Departure Bay with my car. From Nanaimo, I continued to Cathedral Grove, spent one night at Sproat Lake and then travelled to Tofino and Pacific Rim National Park.

After visiting Tofino, I drove south to Victoria and returned to the mainland from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen. This route worked because I did not need to drive back to Nanaimo at the end of the trip. It also allowed me to experience both the Horseshoe Bay and Tsawwassen ferry routes.

Getting to Vancouver Island Without a Car

You can visit Vancouver Island without a car, especially if you are staying in Victoria or Nanaimo. For Nanaimo, Hullo operates a passenger-only ferry between downtown Vancouver and Nanaimo. The crossing takes approximately 75 minutes, and its central terminals make it much more convenient than BC Ferries for many walk-on travellers.

For Victoria, you can take public transportation from Vancouver to Tsawwassen, walk onto the ferry and then take a bus from Swartz Bay to downtown Victoria. The complete journey takes much longer than the ferry crossing alone, so leave early.

Victoria is easy to explore without a vehicle. However, I recommend having a car if you plan to visit Sproat Lake, Pacific Rim National Park, Tofino or several different parts of Vancouver Island.

BC Ferries Reservations and Arrival Tips

Ferry prices and schedules change, so check the official BC Ferries website before travelling. A few simple precautions can prevent most ferry problems:

• Reserve your vehicle in advance, especially during summer and holiday weekends.
• Confirm both your departure and arrival terminals.
• Plan to arrive approximately one hour before departure.
• Remember that reserved check-in generally closes before the sailing.
• Allow extra driving time for Vancouver traffic.
• Check current conditions before leaving.
• Photograph your parking deck and stairwell after boarding.

If you miss your reservation window, you may lose your confirmed space. Arriving early is far less stressful than watching the ferry leave without you.

Can You Visit Vancouver Island on a Day Trip?

Victoria can be visited as a day trip from Vancouver, but it will be a long day. The ferry crossing is only part of the journey because both Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay are outside the city centres.

If you only have one day, focus on downtown Victoria and the Inner Harbour or visit Butchart Gardens. Trying to cover both properly will feel rushed.

Nanaimo is easier for a car-free day trip using Hullo because it connects the downtown areas directly.

Tofino is not a realistic day trip from Vancouver. The ferry and drive across Vancouver Island take too long. Spend at least a few nights near Tofino so you have time for Pacific Rim National Park and experiences such as whale watching on Vancouver Island.
