Banff National Park: 3-Day Bucket List Itinerary
Turquoise lakes, towering peaks, and glaciers tucked between rugged summits: the Canadian Rockies were one of the places I was most excited to explore on my summer road trip across Canada. These three days became one of my favourite parts of the journey.

Snow-covered mountain ridges viewed from a helicopter flight over the Canadian Rockies.
From flying over the mountains in a helicopter to paddling across Moraine Lake, walking along Lake Louise, and driving the Icefields Parkway toward Jasper, this was my bucket list itinerary. I made the most of those long summer days at the end of June, when daylight feels almost endless and exploring stretches well into the evening.
This 3-day Banff itinerary follows my route, combining bigger adventures with scenic walks and roadside stops, plus practical tips to help you plan your own trip.
The route includes nearby Canmore and ends in Jasper National Park, so allow three full sightseeing days, with arrival and onward travel planned separately. It’s an active itinerary: follow my route or choose the experiences that belong on your own bucket list.

My 3-Day Banff Itinerary at a Glance
Day 1: Helicopter views, Banff, and Johnston Canyon
Start in Canmore with an Alpine Helicopters flight over the mountains, then explore Cascade Gardens and Bow Falls in Banff before hiking to Johnston Canyon’s Upper Falls.
Day 2: Moraine Lake and Lake Louise
Canoe on Moraine Lake, then head to Lake Louise for a lakeshore walk and a taste of the Plain of Six Glaciers Trail. This day is all about those famous turquoise lakes and the mountains rising around them.
Day 3: The Icefields Parkway to Jasper
Follow one spectacular landscape after another, with stops at Bow Lake, Peyto Lake, and Athabasca Falls, plus glacier views along the way. This is a full sightseeing day that ends in Jasper, so I wouldn’t plan to fit everything in and drive back to Banff that evening.
Three days of mountain views, turquoise lakes and one unforgettable drive.
Day 1
Canmore + Banff
Day 2
Moraine Lake + Lake Louise
Day 3
Icefields Parkway to Jasper
Have more time? Add Yoho National Park.
Extend your trip with a visit to Emerald Lake and the Spiral Tunnels if you can give yourself a little longer in the Rockies.
Day 1: Helicopter Flight, Banff, and Johnston Canyon
Start with Alpine Helicopters in Canmore
I started in Canmore with Alpine Helicopters, taking a sightseeing flight over glaciers and the peaks surrounding Mount Assiniboine. There’s something dreamlike about seeing the Rockies from above: jagged ridgelines stretching into the distance, ice tucked between mountains, and a landscape that suddenly feels even bigger than you imagined.

Watching the Rockies unfold beyond my window, a bucket list moment above the clouds.

Alpine lakes, endless peaks, and a little sense of wonder seeing the Canadian Rockies from the sky.
It was a beautiful way to begin these three days. Before walking beside turquoise lakes and looking up at towering summits, I got to take in the mountains from the sky.
If a helicopter flight is on your bucket list, my Canmore helicopter tour review covers the 35-minute flight I chose, what I paid and the other flight options available.
Stop at Bow Falls Viewpoint
After the helicopter flight, I continued into Banff National Park and stopped at Bow Falls Viewpoint. From soaring above the mountains to standing beside rushing water, it was a lovely way to experience another side of the Rockies.

Take a little time to enjoy the river and the scenery before heading to Cascade Gardens for a lunch break.
Wander Through Cascade Gardens and Enjoy a Picnic
Next, I headed to Cascade Gardens for a picnic. Between the helicopter flight, Bow Falls, and the hike still ahead, this was my moment to slow down and enjoy being in Banff.

Colourful blooms and mountain views at Cascade of Time Garden, a dreamy setting for a picnic in Banff.
The gardens make a beautiful setting for a leisurely wander, with flowers, winding paths, and mountain views. Bring a picnic, give yourself time to take it all in, and enjoy a quieter pause before continuing to Johnston Canyon.
Hike Johnston Canyon to the Upper Falls
I finished the day at Johnston Canyon, and this is where those long summer days really came in handy. I started hiking around 6 p.m., with plenty of daylight left and far fewer people on the trail.
That timing ended up working beautifully for me. I share the full route, Lower and Upper Falls, crowd experience and timing in my Johnston Canyon hiking guide.
Following the walkways along the canyon, with rushing water below and steep rock walls rising beside me, was a beautiful way to end a day of exploring.

Following the creek between Johnston Canyon’s towering rock walls, a beautiful way to spend a long summer evening.
I didn’t wait in line for the famous photo spot at the Lower Falls. Instead, I continued straight toward the Upper Falls and really enjoyed the walk.
For a slower version of Day 1: skip the helicopter flight or keep your canyon walk shorter. This was my bucket list day, but there’s plenty of room to make it your own.
Day 2: Canoeing on Moraine Lake and Exploring Lake Louise
This day was all about those turquoise lakes you dream of seeing in the Rockies. I gave Moraine Lake and Lake Louise a full day, with time to paddle, wander, and enjoy the mountains surrounding them.
Canoe on Moraine Lake
I booked a shuttle to Moraine Lake, where canoeing was one of my bucket list experiences. Paddling across that brilliant blue water beneath towering peaks was a highlight of my trip.
If canoeing is on your bucket list too, I compared canoeing at Moraine Lake vs Lake Louise based on the scenery, rental options, prices and my own experience on Moraine Lake.

Canoeing on Moraine Lake, surrounded by turquoise water and towering peaks, a little dream from my bucket list brought to life.
Arrange your transportation ahead of time and leave plenty of room for canoeing. If you’d rather stay on shore, take your time enjoying the lake’s viewpoints.
Explore Lake Louise
Next, I headed to Lake Louise and followed the lakeshore trail before continuing along the beginning of the Plain of Six Glaciers Trail. I didn’t complete the full hike, but enjoyed getting beyond the main viewpoint and seeing more of the landscape.

Taking in Lake Louise’s dreamy turquoise water and braving a very cold plunge beneath those snowy peaks!

I also took a very cold plunge! That was part of my experience, though the icy water carries real risks, and you can enjoy this setting just as much from shore.
Leave time to pause along the lake, take in the views, and make it back comfortably for your return transport.
If you’re planning this day yourself, read my one-day Lake Louise and Moraine Lake guide for the transportation strategy I used, canoeing details and how I divided my time between both lakes.
Day 3: Drive the Icefields Parkway to Jasper
Driving the Icefields Parkway was a highlight of my summer road trip, with turquoise lakes, towering peaks, and glaciers unfolding along the way. My main stops were Bow Lake, Peyto Lake, Athabasca Glacier, and Athabasca Falls, before finishing in Jasper.
Peyto Lake was one of the standout stops along this drive. My Peyto Lake guide covers the short viewpoint walk, what to expect at Bow Summit and how much time I’d give this stop.

Following the Icefields Parkway into a world of snowy peaks where the drive is part of the dream.
Give this drive a full day to enjoy the scenery. If you’re following the same route, my guide to the best Icefields Parkway stops covers the lakes, viewpoints, glaciers and waterfalls I stopped at between Lake Louise and Jasper.
Optional Extension: Spiral Tunnels and Emerald Lake in Yoho
My trip also included the Spiral Tunnels and Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park, British Columbia. I’ve kept these separate from the three-day schedule because the main itinerary is already full.
Spiral Tunnels
The Spiral Tunnels were a sightseeing stop on my route through Yoho. They add a different subject to a trip otherwise centred on lakes and mountains. Pair them with your time around Emerald Lake rather than making a separate journey solely for this stop.
Emerald Lake
I also visited Emerald Lake for sightseeing. If you have another day available, this is a natural addition to your time in the Canadian Rockies. You could also substitute a Yoho visit for another part of the itinerary, depending on your priorities.
I wouldn’t automatically add both Yoho stops after canoeing at Moraine Lake and walking at Lake Louise. Give yourself enough time to enjoy them.
Where to Stay for This Itinerary
Canmore or Banff makes a convenient base for the beginning of the trip. You can stay in one place for the first two nights if you prefer fewer hotel changes, just factor in the drive to your lake shuttle departure point.
Lake Louise is another option, especially for the night before heading north along the Icefields Parkway.
For the final night, Jasper lets you finish the drive without doubling back after a full day of exploring.
When comparing places, consider parking and driving time alongside the room price. Sometimes, staying closer is worth the extra cost.
Practical Tips for Planning Your Three Days
Book the big pieces first. Arrange your accommodation, lake transportation, and helicopter flight if it’s on your list. Keep the smaller stops flexible.
Make room for your bucket list. Whether it’s canoeing or hiking, give your favourite experiences enough time.
Prepare for the Icefields Parkway. Leave with enough fuel or battery charge, download your maps, and bring food and water. Check road conditions and park notices before setting off.
Pack for the mountains. Bring layers, rain protection, and comfortable walking shoes. For hiking, carry bear spray, know how to use it, and check trail conditions before heading out.
Is Three Days Enough for Banff?
Three days gave me time to bring some of my Canadian Rockies bucket list dreams to life: flying over the mountains, hiking Johnston Canyon, canoeing on Moraine Lake, exploring Lake Louise, and driving the Icefields Parkway toward Jasper.
This 3-day Banff itinerary made the most of those long June days, but it was an active adventure. For slower mornings or longer hikes, add a few days or focus on your own must-do experiences.
For me, it was an unforgettable part of my summer road trip across Canada, a beautiful taste of the Rockies that left me dreaming of coming back.
