After spending two weeks in Kitsilano, I realized its appeal is not one major attraction. It is the combination of the beach, waterfront walks, local shops and relaxed residential atmosphere.

The best things to do in Kitsilano let you slow down and experience Vancouver beyond Downtown. My top recommendation is simple: walk along the waterfront, spend time at Kits Beach, explore West 4th Avenue and visit the Sunday farmers market if your dates align.

Best Things to Do in Kitsilano

1. Spend Time at Kitsilano Beach

Kitsilano Beach, usually called Kits Beach, is the heart of the neighbourhood in summer. It faces English Bay, with views toward Downtown Vancouver and the North Shore Mountains.

You will see people swimming, playing volleyball, exercising on the grass and meeting friends for sunset. I loved that it felt active without being designed entirely for tourists. I could stop by as part of an ordinary afternoon instead of planning a full sightseeing day around it.

2. Walk Along the Kitsilano Waterfront

The waterfront was one of my favourite parts of staying in Kitsilano. Walk east from Kits Beach toward Vanier Park and Granville Island, or head west toward quieter residential stretches of shoreline.

The views shift between English Bay, Downtown Vancouver and the mountains. These regular walks made Kitsilano feel like a neighbourhood I was living in and not simply another attraction I had come to see.

Bring comfortable shoes and an extra layer because the air can feel cooler beside the water, even in summer.

3. Watch the Sunset or Have a Beach Picnic

Kits Beach is an easy place to end the day without making formal plans. Pick up food nearby, bring a blanket and settle onto the sand or grass overlooking the water.

Summer evenings become lively as locals gather after work, but the atmosphere still feels more residential than English Bay. If you only have a few days in the city, my three-day Vancouver itinerary combines Kitsilano with Granville Island and an English Bay sunset.

4. Swim at Kitsilano Pool

Kitsilano Pool is an outdoor saltwater pool beside Kits Beach, with views across the water toward the mountains. Its long lanes make it popular with serious swimmers, but public swim sessions are also available.
The pool operates seasonally, and schedules can change due to maintenance or weather. Check the City of Vancouver’s current Kitsilano Pool schedule before visiting.

5. Visit the Kitsilano Sunday Farmers Market

The Kitsilano Farmers Market is one of the experiences that makes the neighbourhood feel particularly local. Expect farms, food producers, bakeries, coffee and food trucks, perfect for breakfast or picnic supplies.

For the 2026 summer season, the market runs every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Larch Street and West 10th Avenue, from May 3 to November 1. Confirm current dates on the official Kitsilano Farmers Market page.

My advice: Go early for the widest selection, then continue toward West 4th Avenue or Kits Beach.

6. Take a Class at Club Pilates Kitsilano

One benefit of spending two weeks in Kitsilano was maintaining an everyday routine instead of treating every day like a sightseeing marathon.

I was completely new to Reformer Pilates, so I started with the studio’s free introductory class. It is designed for first-timers and gave me an approachable introduction to the equipment and movements. Honestly, it got me into Pilates!

I continued attending classes at Club Pilates Kitsilano during my stay, which helped the neighbourhood feel even more like a temporary home. The studio offers different class levels, so read the descriptions and choose one that matches your experience.

Best for: Beginners, longer stays, Pilates lovers and travellers who want to maintain their fitness routine.

7. Escape the Rain at The Dome Vancouver

Vancouver can get beautifully moody and rainy. When the weather interrupts your beach plans, head to The Dome at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre in Vanier Park.

Best for: Rainy days, families and immersive experiences.

8. Explore West 4th Avenue

West 4th Avenue is one of Kitsilano’s main commercial streets, lined with cafés, restaurants, fitness studios, outdoor stores and independent shops.

Do not overplan this part. Walk for a few blocks, stop somewhere that catches your attention and let the neighbourhood itself be the experience. This everyday side of Vancouver becomes especially enjoyable when you stay for a week or longer.

9. Walk Through Vanier Park

Vanier Park sits between Kits Beach and Granville Island, offering open green space and views across False Creek.

It is also home to the Museum of Vancouver, Vancouver Maritime Museum and H.R. MacMillan Space Centre. You do not need to visit every museum to enjoy the area, the waterfront setting alone makes it a worthwhile stop.

10. Take the False Creek Ferry to Granville Island

Granville Island is easy to combine with Kitsilano. False Creek Ferries departs from the Maritime Museum dock in Vanier Park and connects to Granville Island and several other False Creek stops.

Reservations are not normally required, but check the False Creek Ferries trip planner for current routes and service updates.

Once you arrive, use my guide to the best things to do on Granville Island to explore the Public Market, artisan shops and waterfront.

11. Go Kayaking or Paddleboarding

Kitsilano’s location makes it a natural base for kayaking or paddleboarding during warmer months. Rental locations, conditions and operating seasons vary, so confirm where the activity begins before making plans.
If you would rather enjoy the coastline without paddling, compare the options in my guide to Vancouver boat tours and water experiences.

Is Kitsilano a Good Place to Stay in Vancouver?

Yes, especially if you are staying for a week or longer and prefer beaches and neighbourhood life over being beside every major attraction.

I spent about one week near Coal Harbour and two weeks in Kitsilano. Coal Harbour made sightseeing easier, but Kitsilano gave me a more relaxed everyday experience. The trade-off was needing buses or extra planning to reach Downtown and North Vancouver.

Allow at least half a day for Kits Beach, the waterfront and West 4th Avenue. A full day gives you time to add the Sunday market, Vanier Park or Granville Island without rushing.
